Common questions
Why separate assigned nights from disrupted nights?
Because they are different quantities and only one of them is what you experience. Two jobs can carry identical call ratios while one wakes you most nights and the other rarely does. Assigned nights come straight from the schedule you enter; disrupted nights are modeled from your own estimate of urgent overnight contacts.
How is the disruption rate calculated?
For home call, the probability that at least one waking contact arrives on an assigned night is modeled as 1 minus e to the negative lambda, where lambda is your estimate of urgent overnight contacts per assigned night. Pages that do not wake anyone are tracked separately and excluded. In-house nights are treated as disrupted by definition, and the question there becomes how much sleep is lost, which is a direct input.
How is a weekend counted?
As three overnight periods: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Schedules vary, and the assumption is printed alongside the results. A two-night weekend would reduce the annual total proportionally.
Does this make any claim about my health?
No. Sleep hours displaced is arithmetic on the estimates you enter, not a measurement and not a health assessment. DoctorCalculator makes no claim about the effect of call on your health, your clinical performance, or patient outcomes.
What counts as an uncompensated call hour?
Documentation and follow-up time and travel to the hospital are never separately compensated, so they are always counted as uncompensated. When no call stipend or per-night pay is entered at all, every call hour is counted as uncompensated, and the tool says so rather than implying the burden is priced.
